Wulfrunians progress in FA Vase

The FA Vase

AFC Wulfrunians 4  Harrowby Utd 2 (aet)

And so the  Wembley journey begins with Midland League Wulfrunians entertaining United Counties League side Harrowby Utd at Castlecroft. As stated in the programme notes this is a massive competition for sides at this level. With both teams hitting form there was sure to be goals and we were not to be disappointed. The hosts claimed first blood in the 16th minute when Anslow bamboozled the defender to score a nice individual goal. This goal was especially welcomed by me and my mate as we had the Golden Goal ticket. Get in ! Things got lively with some 'interesting' tackling and the referee rather made a rod for his own back by booking a couple of players rather than having a word in their ear. He eventually booked 7 or 8 players and as a result he spoiled his own performance.Shame really as this was never a dirty game, just, shall we say, robust. The visitors got a deserved equalizer but back came Wulfrunians with a penalty converted by our MOTM,King. Both teams were reduced to 10 men in the second half, the visitors being first but strangely this seemed to spur Harrowby on and they levelled with a penalty. Wulfrunians booked their place in the next round with a couple of goals in extra time.

Cradley go goal crazy !

West Midlands Regional League Premier Division

Cradley TownWellington Amateurs 1

On a cold, wet, October afternoon us neutrals were treated to a brilliant game of football by two teams who who like to play the right way but aren't averse to knocking it over the top when needed. For the first few minutes it looked as though Amateurs had come to knock Town off their lofty perch but as the game settled it soon became clear the hosts would be calling most of the shots and when they took an early lead it wasn't too much of a surprise. The visitors took this setback in their stride and continued to press but the home rear-guard were in no mood to be giving out early Christmas presents. Just before the break Town increased their lead with an absolute peach of a goal from their number 10(Stevenson ?) You wont see a better goal on MOTD tonight.
The first 10 minutes of the second half killed the game stone-dead as a contest with Town hitting three more, one of which was a replica of the (in)famous 1966 Geoff Hurst goal bouncing off the underside of the bar and over the line - according to the linesman(I don't think he's Russian!).Amazingly,Amateurs responded by taking the game to their hosts and were rewarded for their persistence with a nicely worked goal.Late in the game Town added a penalty and a further goal.
Town certainly deserved their win.Their style of football is very easy on the eyes with number 10 seemingly involved in everything they do.You would have to say Amateurs didn't deserve quite such a stuffing; as already stated they also contributed to a good afternoons' entertainment.

Casuals hit 7 in a goal-feast

Staffordshire FA Senior Challenge Vase. 1st Round

Wolverhampton Casuals 7 Wyrley 1

This looked,to all intents and purposes,a decent game with Premier League Casuals entertaining Div 1 Wyrley and that's how it panned out, with the visitors more than holding their own until the 20th minute, when Holdcroft put the hosts ahead.Still,Wyrley continued as before, moving the ball around without actually threatening to score.25th minutes and its all gone to brown stuff as Perry doubled Cassies lead. Before the visitors could catch their breath it was half-time and they were 4-0 down.Come the second half and Wyrley had obviously decided to give  it a real go and it paid off as they got a goal back. The fifth seemed to knock the stuffing out of the visitors as Casuals threatened to overwhelm them and it was no real surprise as a sixth and seventh were added before the ref blew to save Wyrley any more punishment.Fair play to the visitors, they came, they gave it a go but caught their hosts on top of their game.Special mention for Casuals' Trow who nabbed himself a hat-trick.
